A keto formula can look good on paper and still become difficult once it reaches the formulation desk.
We see this most often when a product brief tries to achieve several things at the same time: more BHB, more electrolytes, fewer capsules, a smaller scoop, less sugar, and a clean taste.
Individually, each target may sound reasonable. Put them together, and they start competing with each other.
At Jiabei Health, this is where we usually begin as a keto supplement manufacturer. Before talking about packaging or label design, we look at whether the formula actually fits the dosage form, serving size, and intended user experience.
Some customers come to us with a complete formula. Others have only a product idea, such as a keto electrolyte powder, an MCT softgel, or a low-sugar gummy.
Both can work.
The important part is deciding what the finished product needs to do before commercial production starts.

These are starting points rather than fixed rules for every product.
A stock capsule formula in a standard bottle is a very different project from a custom sugar-free gummy with a new flavor and printed packaging. Raw material minimums, packaging minimums, sampling, and testing can all affect the final order requirement.
That is why we prefer to quote the actual product rather than advertise one MOQ for every keto supplement.
Start With the Formula, Not the “Keto” Label
“Keto” is useful for positioning a product in the market. It tells us much less about how the product needs to be manufactured.
A BHB powder, MCT softgel, electrolyte capsule, and mineral gummy may all appear in the same keto category, but the production considerations are completely different.
When a new formula comes to our formulation team, one of the first things we calculate is the total active weight per serving.
That simple number often tells us a lot.
Can the formula realistically fit into two capsules?
Does the proposed scoop size make sense?
Is a gummy format still practical?
Will there be enough room in the formula for flavor and excipients?
These questions are easier to answer before sampling than after packaging has already been designed.
BHB: The First Constraint Is Usually Ingredient Load
BHB formulas are a good example.
Common options include:
- sodium BHB;
- calcium BHB;
- magnesium BHB;
- potassium BHB.
When several BHB salts are combined, the total ingredient weight can rise quickly.
A brand may initially focus on the milligram amount it wants on the label. From a manufacturing perspective, we also have to look at how much physical powder those amounts create.
With capsules, we calculate how much material the selected capsule size can hold and how many capsules would be needed for one serving.
Sometimes the formula technically fits.
That does not always mean it is a good product.
If a brand expects consumers to take two capsules but the actual formula needs five or six, we would rather raise that issue during formulation review than discover it after the first production plan has been built.
For powders, there is more space to work with, but a higher BHB load usually shifts the challenge toward taste.
This is why our review does not stop at the ingredient list.
We look at:
- active weight per serving;
- mineral sources;
- intended scoop or capsule count;
- flavor risk;
- packaging format;
- serving frequency.
A stronger front-label number only helps if the finished product remains practical to use.
Electrolytes: A Simple Formula Can Become a Difficult Serving

Electrolyte products often look simple at first.
Sodium. Potassium. Magnesium. Perhaps calcium or a few supporting ingredients.
The actual difficulty becomes clearer after target amounts are assigned.
A high mineral load may make a capsule formula too large. A powder gives more room, but some mineral salts bring strong salty, bitter, or metallic notes.
We occasionally recommend increasing the serving size rather than forcing a mineral-heavy formula into a smaller scoop.
A smaller scoop can look cleaner on the label, but giving the formula a little more room may improve flavor development and make the product easier to formulate consistently.
This is the type of trade-off that does not always show up in an initial product brief.
Brands often want:
- high electrolyte amounts;
- a small serving;
- low sweetness;
- a short ingredient list;
- clean flavor.
Sometimes all five work together.
Sometimes one of them has to move.
Part of formulation work is identifying that early.
MCT Oil and MCT Powder Need Different Manufacturing Plans
MCT is another ingredient where the product name can hide very different manufacturing requirements.
MCT oil naturally fits oil-based formats such as softgels or liquid products.
MCT powder opens up other possibilities, including drink mixes, jars, sachets, and more complex powder blends.
But the powder system has its own considerations.
We look at:
- carrier composition;
- flowability;
- mouthfeel;
- blend uniformity;
- compatibility with electrolytes, flavors, acids, and sweeteners.
If MCT powder is only one part of a larger keto blend, we have to evaluate the whole system rather than the ingredient by itself.
A formula can contain good individual ingredients and still produce a poor finished powder.
The ingredients have to work together.
The Dosage Form Can Make or Break the Formula
One mistake we see in early product planning is choosing the format before calculating the active load.
A brand may prefer gummies because they are easier to market.
Another may want capsules because they look more premium.
The formula still has to fit.

Why Powders Often Work Better for High-Load Keto Formulas
If a formula contains several grams of active ingredients per serving, powder often gives the formulator more room.
The serving can be delivered in a jar, pouch, sachet, or stick pack instead of being divided across multiple capsules.
This is common with BHB and electrolyte formulas.
The trade-off is taste.
A powder can blend perfectly in production and still be unpleasant to drink.
When we review mineral-heavy powders, we do not treat taste as something to fix at the very end.
Flavor direction, acid balance, sweetness, mineral load, and serving size need to be considered together.

A Keto Gummy Has to Be Designed as a Gummy

A gummy cannot simply be treated as a capsule formula in a softer format.
The active material takes up physical space.
Minerals affect flavor.
The sweetener system influences texture and mouthfeel.
Acids affect both flavor and the gummy base.
With reduced-sugar or sugar-free concepts, the system becomes more sensitive.
When we receive a gummy brief, we normally calculate the active weight before discussing final gummy size or flavor.
If too much of the gummy is already occupied by minerals or other actives, there is less room for the base system to maintain the texture and eating quality the brand expects.
In some projects, increasing the serving from two gummies to three may be more realistic than forcing too much active material into each piece.
That is a formulation decision, not simply a packaging decision.

Taste Is Often the Part Brands Underestimate
Taste problems are easier and cheaper to solve during sampling than after the formula has been locked.
This matters in keto products because many common ingredients are not naturally neutral.
Mineral salts can bring salty, bitter, or metallic notes. High active loads reduce the amount of room available for the flavor system. A sugar-free brief may limit the options further.
Simply increasing the flavor dosage is not always the answer.
We have seen mineral-heavy samples become worse when the masking flavor was pushed too far.
The first sip becomes stronger, but the salty or metallic finish is still there.
In that situation, we go back to the formula rather than continuing to add flavor.
Sometimes a small change in acid balance helps.
Sometimes the serving size needs to move.
Sometimes the mineral source or sweetener system needs another look.
That is why we prefer to keep the formula flexible until the sample has been evaluated.
Packaging can wait.
The product itself comes first.
What We Usually Learn From the First Sample

The first sample rarely answers only one question.
With a keto powder, it often tells us three or four things at once:
- whether the serving size feels reasonable;
- whether the mineral profile is too aggressive;
- whether the flavor system has enough room to work;
- whether the original formulation concept needs adjustment.
If a sample is too salty or too heavy, we do not immediately label it a flavor problem.
We go back and look at the active load, mineral sources, acid system, sweetener, and serving size together.
The same principle applies to gummies.
A gummy may taste acceptable but feel too soft.
Or the texture may work while the active load is too low.
Sampling is where those compromises become visible.
This is one reason we do not like to finalize packaging too early in a custom project.
The first sample may change the formula.
And sometimes it should.
Before We Make a Sample, We Check Four Things
We do not need every customer to arrive with a finished technical specification.
But before sampling, there are four things we want to understand.
Active weight
How much physical material needs to fit into one serving?
This tells us quickly whether the proposed dosage form is realistic.
Serving size
A formula and serving size should be designed together.
If the customer wants two capsules but the formula realistically needs four, that should be discussed before sampling.
Dosage-form capacity
Powders, capsules, gummies, and softgels all have different practical limits.
Sometimes changing the format solves the problem faster than trying to force the original idea to work.
Flavor risk
This matters most with powders and gummies.
Mineral-heavy blends, strong botanical extracts, and reduced-sugar systems usually deserve more attention during sample development.
These checks are simple, but they prevent a lot of unnecessary work later.
Stock Formula or Custom Formula?
Not every brand needs a custom formulation.
For a new brand testing the keto category, an existing private label formula may be the faster and more economical way to start.
Custom development makes more sense when the product has a clear reason to be different.
That may include:
- a specific BHB mineral ratio;
- defined electrolyte targets;
- a preferred MCT source;
- a particular flavor profile;
- vegan, Halal, Kosher, or other formulation requirements;
- a competitor benchmark;
- a specific serving size;
- a target retail price.
A custom formula is useful when those details matter.
It is not automatically better simply because it is custom.

What We Need Before Giving a Useful Quote
We can give a more useful quotation when we understand the basic shape of the project.
The most helpful information includes:
- product format;
- formula or key ingredients;
- target serving size;
- estimated order quantity;
- destination market;
- bottle, pouch, jar, sachet, or stick-pack requirement;
- stock or custom formula;
- special ingredient or certification requirements.
A finished formula is not required.
A brief such as:
“We want an electrolyte powder with sodium, potassium, and magnesium for the U.S. market, packed in 30-serving jars.”
is already enough to begin.
From there, we can ask about ingredient targets, serving size, flavor direction, packaging, and quantity.
That is much more useful than spending weeks building a detailed specification before checking whether the concept is realistic.
Testing Requirements Should Be Agreed Before Production

Testing should not become a conversation that starts after the commercial batch is already finished.
Before production, we prefer to confirm what the buyer or importer expects the finished product to meet.
Depending on the product and market, this may include:
- raw material verification;
- identity testing;
- microbial limits;
- heavy metal limits;
- finished-product specifications;
- batch records;
- COA requirements;
- label and packaging confirmation.
This matters because a “standard COA” does not always mean the same thing to every buyer.
We have seen projects become unnecessarily complicated when the buyer and manufacturer were working from different specification expectations.
It is better to agree on the limits and documentation first.

MOQ: The Factory Minimum Is Only Part of the Story
For suitable standard bottled products, our MOQ can start from 500 bottles.
But that number does not automatically apply to every keto project.
A standard capsule in a stock bottle may fit that level.
A custom gummy, custom flavor, special raw material, or printed packaging may not.
We check several minimums separately when quoting:
- production MOQ;
- raw material supplier MOQ;
- flavor or premix MOQ;
- bottle or pouch MOQ;
- printed label or carton MOQ.
This is important because packaging is often where a supposedly small project becomes expensive.
A factory may accept 500 bottles, but a custom bottle supplier may require a much larger quantity.
Those are different minimums.
A useful quote should make that clear.
Lead Time: Fifteen Days From What Point?
For a standard project, commercial production is typically around 15 days after the formula, packaging details, artwork, deposit, and required materials are confirmed.
The important part is the phrase “after everything is confirmed.”
Formula development happens before that.
Sampling happens before that.
Special raw materials may need to arrive before that.
If a custom powder needs three flavor rounds, those sample rounds are not part of the same 15-day production window.
We prefer to separate:
development time
from
commercial production time
because that gives buyers a more realistic launch schedule.
When comparing manufacturers, asking “What is your lead time?” is useful.
Asking “When does the lead time start?” is better.
A Formula That Works on Paper May Still Need Adjustment
This is normal product development.
It does not mean the original formula was bad.
A specification tells us what the brand wants.
Sampling and manufacturing review tell us how those decisions behave in a real product.
A capsule formula may require too many capsules.
A powder may have a strong active profile but an unpleasant finish.
A gummy may meet the target ingredient list but lose the texture the brand expected.
An electrolyte formula may work better with a slightly larger serving.
When this happens, the goal is not to protect every number on the original spreadsheet.
The goal is to protect what matters most to the product.
For one brand, that may be the active level.
For another, it may be a two-gummy serving.
For another, taste may be the priority because the product is intended for daily use.
Those trade-offs should be discussed openly.
That is part of the manufacturer’s job.
What We Look at Before Saying a Formula Is Ready
We do not consider a formula finished simply because all of the ingredients fit on the specification sheet.
Before moving toward commercial production, we want to know:
Does the serving size make sense?
Can the selected format carry the active load?
Has the sample been evaluated for taste or texture?
Are the raw materials practical to source at production scale?
Are the buyer’s testing requirements clear?
Does the commercial MOQ fit the project?
If the answers are not clear yet, there is usually no reason to rush into packaging.
A good manufacturing project becomes easier as these questions are resolved.
